Theatre du Pif's first ever performance took place at the Marburg International Theatre Festival in Germany in 1992. Since then we have continued to present our work to international audiences in Asia and Europe. We have also directed theatre productions overseas and conducted a variety of community theatre and education & outreach projects. They involve people of varying interests, abilities and backgrounds from professional performers to students, from community groups to the general public. These exchanges have been vital for the company's artistic development and growth.

Meanwhile, over the years these small-scale projects have provided the company with the chance to engage in a variety of creative adventures out-with our usual larger scale productions. They give the company the chance to experiment with new ideas and to engage and develop new dialogues, with artists from other countries and different art forms. Theatre du Pif have taken their work into non theatre spaces such as beaches, shopping malls, civic centre plazas and parks.

Workshops

Theatre du Pif have been teaching workshops for schools since 1992 and have led groups in Scotland, Hong Kong, China, Germany and Macau. They have also taught at several notable Drama schools such as The Beijing Academy for Dramatic Arts, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Royal Scottish Academy for Music and Drama.

The range of workshops are extensive and include physical preparation of the body, acting and improvisation, devising theatre, the neutral mask, movement and voice technique and the Feldenkrais Method.

Specific themed workshops include:

1) From the page to the stage
This workshop gives students the chance to explore their own creativity and present a short theatre piece based around a piece of fiction, e.g. novel, poem, short story. The workshop explores in a very practical way, the techniques used in finding theatre forms (writing, drama, movement, music, use of space) from a base source of literature. The workshops usually include a short presentation of the student's work. It is the intention of the workshop to inspire students to create their own work and to foster a belief in their own unique talents.

The above workshop can also be for secondary school teachers who wish to learn some of the techniques and skills used in devising theatre.

2) Vocabulary of Movement
This workshop aims to explore the different components inherent in 'movement', for example, speed, shape, dynamics, tension, relaxation, orientation in space and then investigate how they can be utilized in the creation of poetic drama. Through experimenting with the vocabulary of movement, the participants will be challenged to heighten their sensitivity, and develop their dramatic instinct towards performance in general.
