The Actors’ Lab began in 2014 at Cattle Depot’s N2 Space, has evolved over the years into a live performance created and led by its participants following six seasons of gatherings in Sai Kung.

The Actors’ Lab 2014-2015

In 2014, the company invited a core of theatre practitioners to take part in a 6-week gathering devoted to practical skill extension and development, while researching and sharing ideas on the work of the Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov. Each week balanced informal discussions, scene-work, rehearsals and collaborative skill exchange between directors, writers, actors, musicians and video artists.

Participants in the project explored during concentrated sessions with Bonni Chan and Sean Curran, scene-work, improvisations, physical, vocal and acting training and devising theatre based on Chekhov’s short stories and his play The Seagull.

In April there were presentations of the work that had been developed throughout the project as well as talks and theatre skill workshops that were open to the public.

In Sep 2015, the company re-launched the lab again and invited various artists to collaborate based on Chekhov’s Three sisters. Crossing the boundary geographically and artistically, the company invited award winning Korean director Yang Jun-gung and stage designer Lee Yun-soo to lead a workshop that explored the relation between site, space and the stage, based on Alice in the Wonderland; and also visual arts artist Sylvia Chan to lead the Painter’s Lab walking a journey into the worlds of Katsushika Hokusai, Paul Klee and Giorgio Morandi with improvisational presentations inspired by the artists and devised by the Lab artists.

In addition to the Lab core of theatre practitioners, four open presentations presenting work that had sprung from various evocations. The Wing and the Painter’s LAB workshops were open and welcome the participation of both practitioners and the audience.
