Acting and Directing Workshop with Garry Hynes
Garry’s five day intensive workshop is designed as an introduction to the essentials of directing performances for the stage. There are 12 places available on the workshop for 4 directors and 8 actors. Garry will explore with the directors and actors Samuel Beckett’s seminal play ENDGAME.
Directing
The four directors will all get the chance to explore the process of bringing a text to life through
- Understanding the role of the director and their relationship with the actors and the text
- Directing actors in scene work and exploring key skills such as text analysis, directorial interpretation, scene work and improvisation
- Blocking scenes and solving creative problems
Acting
The eight actors will explore some of the key ingredients required for acting for the stage including:
- Developing their rehearsal technique and professional practice
- Learning how to collaborate with other actors and the director
- Text analysis, scene study and improvisation
- Creating truthful and authentic performances that yield a direct relationship between themselves and Beckett’s text.
The workshop will be taught in English with Cantonese translation
Scenes from Endgame will be translated into Cantonese so local performers can work in their own language if they wish to. The directors and actors will all receive critical feedback from Garry throughout the workshop.
Garry Hynes
Garry Hynes is an internationally acclaimed theatre director who has won numerous theatre awards including being the first woman to win the prestigious Tony Award for Best Direction in a play.
Garry is the founder and artistic director of Druid Theatre Company, Galway and she has also directed productions for other major companies including The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Kennedy Centre and The Royal Court Theatre, London.
For over fifty years Druid have toured throughout Ireland and all over the globe with a range of performances, including the works of Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett as well as modern playwrights such as Martin McDonagh and Enda Walsh.
