MARCOVALDO
Based on a collection of short stories by Italo Calvino.

Marcovaldo explores the life of Marcovaldo, an unskilled worker living with his family in a drab industrial city. He is an irrepressible dreamer and an incorrigible schemer. Much to the puzzlement of his wife, his children, his boss, and his neighbours, he chases his dreams-but the results are never the expected ones.

Combining farce with fantasy and mixing comical disasters with a surrealistic view of city life, Marcovaldo is a highly visual theatrical exploration of some of the oft-overlooked elements of modern urban living: nature, pollution, hardship, distraction, relationship and simplicity.

Critics

"Affectionate and gratifying...a miraculous presentation of the entanglement between fiction and reality."
C for Culture

"The beauty of this performance lay in its creative use of simple materials (like magazines and newspapers) to unleash the vast possibilities of imagination."
Muse

"Theatre du Pif's Marcovaldo at the Fringe Festival reminded us how stage and life are reflections; story is the mirror. Northern Italy became southern China. National and ethnic boundaries dissolved in universality."
